NEW YORK CIDER ASSOCIATION PARTNERS WITH RAISE A GLASS FOUNDATION TO PRODUCE INAUGURAL NEW YORK CIDER COMPETITION
16 Double Gold and 3 Gold Medals Awarded from a Field of 150 Entries
The Best in Show winner of the Governor’s Cider Cup was Kite & String’s 2017 Pioneer Pippin, a Traditional Method, fruit-forward cider highlighting Pioneer Crab and Newtown Pippin apples. This marks the second consecutive vintage of this cider to be identified as the best cider being made in New York State, on the heels of the 2018 Governor’s Cider Cup win for the 2016 vintage. This year, Kite & String also won a Double Gold medal for 2017 Goldrush.
Here’s what we have to say about Pippin’s main inspiration…
Crab apples! These high acid little fruit bombs are full of flavor and tannin and can make a cider that is complex and quenching. Some of these crab apples are an entirely other species from the common dessert apples Malus domestica… Manchurian crab is alternately Malus mandshurica or bacata. Pioneer Pippin is a glimpse into that crazy, exponentially expanding world of apple genetics we continue to geek out about. (MMadden, August 2018).
